IndexRef Version 1.4 now available!

Have you ever created a PDF from FrameMaker with cross reference index entries like this?

rocks. See stones

Have you noticed what happens when you open the PDF in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader and click the index entry? Instead of jumping to the cross reference location in the index, you are sent off into the document itself and you have to find your way back to the index.

Unfortunately, this is a by-product of the way FrameMaker creates its indexes. Every entry in the index links to the marker defining the entry. For normal index entries, this is ideal. For cross reference entries created with the <$nopage> building block, though, it doesn't work properly.

IndexRef is a FrameMaker API client (plugin) that fixes this shortcoming.

IndexRef finds cross reference entries in an index, determines where the destination link should be, and rewrites the hyperlink so clicking it will jump to the appropriate place in the index.

New in version 1.4.2

IndexRef is now free for all users.

New in version 1.4.1

Version 1.4.1 is a minor bug fix. IndexRef now uses its own error console, instead of the FrameMaker book error log.

Version 1.4 no longer requires a licence key or your FrameMaker registration number. The evaluation version is identical to the licensed version.

New in version 1.3.1

Version 1.3 contains the following improvements:

There is no cost to upgrade for existing users. Your current license key will continue to work.

IndexRef requires FrameMaker 6.0 or higher for Windows.

IndexRef works directly on the generated index file, and does not alter any of the markers used to create the index. It is compatible with other FrameMaker indexing tools like IXgen and Index Tools Professional.

Effective April 1, 2012, IndexRef is free to all users.

Install IndexRef

IndexRef is supplied in a single zip archive, containing three files. The files are:

To install IndexRef, create a new sub-directory below the fminit\Plugins directory in your FrameMaker installation directory. The name of the directory is not important, but it is simplest to name it after the plugin. For example, if the FrameMaker product is installed in

C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.0

then create a new directory named IndexRef in

C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.0\fminit\Plugins

Using WinZip or another similar program, unzip into the new directory. The next time FrameMaker is started, it will search the Plugins directories and load IndexRef automatically.
